Many of members of staff have enjoyed previous careers in academia, government service, industry and commerce; moreover, we are fortunate to have both senior and assistant examiners in the staff body.


Julian Davies BSc (Bath), PhD (UKC)
Principal

Julian Davies was educated at Queen Elizabeth Cambria School, Carmarthen, and the universities of Bath and Kent.  He read Applied Biology at the University of Bath before going on to the University of Kent where he awarded a PhD for his thesis on the biological response to climate change in Antarctica.

He began his teaching career in Canterbury before joining Abbey College Cambridge in 1997 as a teacher of A-level Biology.  He was promoted to Head of Biology & Director of Studies in 1998 and to Vice Principal in 2001.

Julian Davies was appointed Principal of Abbey College Cambridge in 2002.

During his time as Principal, the College has undertaken a substantial increase in student numbers and acquired the latest teaching facilities while retaining small, focused teaching groups.

He is proud of leading the College to the top of the UK league of Independent 6th Form Colleges and in his work in recruiting the most able students from around the world.

Andrew Roberts read Mathematics at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, before training as a teacher at the University of Keele, where he obtained a Post-graduate Certificate in Education.

Andrew taught Mathematics at a grammar school near Slough for 5 years before joining Abbey College Cambridge as a Mathematics tutor in September 2004.  He was promoted to Director of Operations in August 2007 and to Vice Principal (Academic) in 2010.

For recreation, Andrew enjoys playing snooker, bridge and table tennis.

Mark Lassman has significant experience in the field of education and training.  He has worked extensively in the corporate and academic worlds both in Great Britain and overseas.  He has lived and worked for long periods in countries as diverse as Brazil, Germany, Israel and Portugal, working in teaching, training and consulting for a range of international and educational organisations such as GTZ Dusseldorf (Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit), the University of Porto, Middlesex University and MSD (Merck, Sharp & Dohme).  He has also run his own communication skills consultancy, specialising in inter-cultural communications for multi-national companies.

Mark Lassman studied Political Science and Linguistics at undergraduate level and Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching at post-graduate level.  He has also completed a course of initial training in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming).

Mark Lassman joined Abbey College Cambridge in 1999 as a teacher of History and Politics.  He was promoted to Director of Studies in 2002 and was appointed Director of International Admissions in 2009.

Duncan Colquhoun is married and has 3 grown up children.  He spent his early life in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and came to Britain when he was 17 years old to read Mathematics at the University of Cambridge.

Duncan joined Abbey College Cambridge as a Mathematics tutor in September 2005.  He was promoted to Head of Mathematics in 2007 and to Head of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics & Computing in 2010.

Duncan is a keen sportsman and plays lawn tennis, real tennis, squash and golf.. He organises the College's table tennis club.

Alexandra Whalley was educated at Aylesbury High School and Haileybury before graduating from the University of Manchester in 1997 with a Masters in Chemistry.  She then undertook a PhD in bio-inorganic chemistry at the University of Nottingham and two post-doctorial positions; one at the University of Delaware, USA, and one at the University of Cambridge.

Alexandra joined Abbey College Cambridge as a teacher of chemistry in September 2004 and was promoted to Head of Chemistry in September 2005.  In September 2009 she was promoted to the newly created role of Faculty Leader for Natural Sciences.  She has been an A-Level Examiner in Chemistry for Edexcel since 2005.

After graduating with a BSc in Business Operations, Debbie spent time in a number of business related fields, including management consultancy for the Audit Commission and an accelerated management development programme at Lloyds TSB Bank before studying for a Post-graduate Certificate in Education at the University of Warwick.

Debbie has taught Business Studies and Accounting and coordinated vocational courses in a secondary school and sixth form college.  She joined Abbey College Cambridge in 2008 and was appointed Faculty Leader for Commerce in 2010.  She is married with two children and enjoys spending her time with her family.

Boz Kempski is a Mathematics graduate from Royal Holloway College, University of London.  He also holds a MPhil degree in Sampling Theory.  Boz was formerly Head of the Department of Mathematics, Physics & Electronics at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.  He joined Abbey College Cambridge as a Mathematics tutor in September 2004 and was appointed Coordinator of Mathematics in 2010.

In addition to classroom teaching, Boz specialises in designing computer-based materials for teaching Mathematics to 6th form students.  He has presented his work at several international conferences in Great Britain, Europe, Canada and the USA.

Dekla Termanis grew up and was educated in Adelaide, South Australia.  She read Pure Mathematics & Organic Chemistry at the University of Adelaide and gained a Secondary Teachers Diploma from Adelaide Teachers College.

Her parents are Latvian and she is bilingual in Latvian and English.  She also speaks German reasonably fluently since she lived for a considerable time in Germany.  Her son has just finished reading Mathematics & Computing at university and is now working in industry.  Her daughter is in her final year at university where she is studying Biochemistry & Genetics.

Dekla has taught in Australia, Africa, Germany and Great Britain.  On her regular trips to visit her family in Australia, she has spent time in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.  She travels to Europe regularly to visit her friends.

Helen Gascoyne-Cecil read Mathematics at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, before training as a teacher at de Montfort University where she gained a Post-graduate Certificate in Education.

She taught at a secondary school in Cambridgeshire until she was appointed secretary of her church in Cambridge in 2004.  She joined Abbey College Cambridge as a mathematics tutor in January 2007.

Helen involves herself in her church's activities.  She enjoys recreational sport, particularly organising and playing at her local badminton club.

Jamie Mitchell was educated at Dane Court Grammar School, Kent, and the University of Bath.  He graduated with a BSc in Mathematics & Computer Science in 2000 and became a Software Consultant.  He has written software for Geographic Information Systems and the medical application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Jamie Mitchell joined Abbey College Cambridge as a sessional tutor in 2003.  He became a full-time tutor in 2004 and was promoted to Head of Computing in 2005.

Charles Sealey was educated as a Chemical Engineer at Downing College, University of Cambridge, and later completed a PhD at the University of Birmingham.  He pursued a career first as an Engineer and later as a Marketing Manager with a number of world-class companies.  He ended his time in industry as National Marketing Manager (Benelux) for a multi-national consultancy firm before retraining as a teacher at Homerton College, University of Cambridge.

Charles joined Abbey College Cambridge as a Mathematics tutor in September 2000 and was Head of Mathematics from 2003 to 2004.  He now specialises in Further Mathematics and the preparation of students who seek entry to the topmost British universities, particularly the Oxbridge colleges.

David Farrell read Economics, Sociology & Politics at the National University of Ireland Galway, Ireland.  He went on to complete his MA in Economics at the same university in 2007.

From 2007 to 2009 he was a lecturer in Economics at the JE Cairnes School of Business & Economics in Ireland.  During this time he assisted the Irish government in a nation-wide study enquiring into the efficiency of hospital outpatient departments.

In 2010 he gained a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Economics & Business Studies with Citizenship at the University of Worcester.

David is a keen athlete and has won several Irish national titles at 80m hurdles and 110m hurdles.  He plays competitive tennis and Gaelic games.
