John Hughes

Head of Economics

‘I love teaching Economics because it helps develop our ability to think about the real world in abstract ways. Nothing could prepare you better for a life in the ever-changing modern workplace than a background in Economics. At Abbey College, my students are driven to develop their understanding of the subject and to succeed academically; this makes it a pleasure to teach here.’

John graduated from Sussex University with a BA (Hons) degree in Economics. He also has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Staffordshire University and a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

After graduating from university John worked for a financial services firm where he liaised with the firm’s largest client, Halifax, before moving onto the Quality Assurance Department. He then taught English as a foreign language in Tokyo. He started teaching Economics in 2010, in Shanghai. He taught Diploma Programme Economics in the International Baccalaureate Programme at a well-respected school in Xuhui District.

John began working as an Economics teacher at Abbey College in 2016 and became the Head of Department in 2021. He is also the coordinator of the Pre-Degree Diploma, which helps prepare students for study at undergraduate level across a wide range of subjects.

Outside of Economics, John has interests in history, anthropology, dendrology and literature.
