Sports Day 2025 – Student Blog

16th May 25

.

On Wednesday 30th April we held our annual Abbey College Cambridge Sports Day at the University of Cambridge Athletic Ground. The event gave the whole school the opportunity to come together to represent and support their college houses.

During the morning all students competed against one another as teams in their tutor groups.  They had to complete a number of team tasks in a set time to win points, with the tutor group with the most points named best tutor group.

Then in the afternoon we held traditional running races, where students competed for their house and again points were awarded for places. These points were then added to the tutor group points awarded in the morning to determine the overall Sports Day House winner.

Some of our students have written blog pieces and compiled interviews from the day to share their thoughts on Sports Day; keep reading to hear what they have to say, see photos from the event and celebrate the 2025 Sports Day winners!

Abbey College Cambridge Sports Day 2025

Student blog piece by Maia (Year 9)

Sports Day 2025 at Abbey College Cambridge was held at the University Sports Ground, bringing together students and staff for a day of athletic competition and fun games. The afternoon events featured a range of track and field events, while the morning schedule was full of simple, friendly group activities.

In the morning, students and teachers arrived on coaches to the venue. The activities for the first half of the day had been set up within the athletics track, and we completed them in our tutor groups. There was a wide range of challenges, including archery, skyscraper building, floor is lava, sticky golf, and sumo suit relay. During the lunch break, there was a barbecue and also an ice cream van available to students as a refreshment before the track and field events. During the afternoon, students participated in several athletics events, racing for 1st place. The competitions included 200m and 100m sprints, girls’, boys’ and mixed relay, shotput, 800m and many others. After the sporting day had ended, the dance group gave a final performance to the entire school.

Interview with Year 9 student Clara:

.

Interviewer: What events did you participate in?

Clara: I signed up for the girls’ 100m sprint and I filled in a position for the mixed relay.

Interviewer: Did you prepare for today?

Clara: No, I didn’t feel the need to. The atmosphere at Sports Day is quite relaxed so I didn’t feel any pressure.

Interviewer: How did you feel before the race?

Clara: A little bit nervous. All of the other competitors were quite a bit older than me, so I wasn’t sure if I would be able to match their speed.

Interviewer: How did you feel after the race?

Clara: I felt amazing. I was so pleased with myself after winning the 100m. I’m also proud to be a part of the team that won the mixed relay. I also congratulate anyone who participated in the track and field events today. Its not easy to compete in front of the whole school.

Interviewer: Have you enjoyed Sports Day?

Clara: I’ve enjoyed it a lot. It’s the first time I’ve been to Sports Day at this school, and I love how there are more informal tutor group games in the morning. It gives everyone a chance to take part, whether they’re sporty or not.

Overall, the house that won Sports Day was Hera House. The day was a fantastic display of teamwork and athletic talent. Students cheered loudly for their teams, and every race was filled with excitement. From sprints to long-distance runs, everyone gave their best effort. The relays were especially thrilling, with close finishes and lots of encouragement from the sidelines.

100m Sprint Event Report

Student blog piece by Wang Yu (Year 12)

On the day of the 100m sprint final, many people were excited to watch the race. The runners were all prepared and ready at the starting line. However, something unexpected happened. One runner started running before the gun was fired. This is called a false start, and the runner was disqualified right away. It was a big shock for the crowd.

When the race finally started, it was very fast and intense. Two runners were very close to each other, racing hard to win. It looked like the runner in first place had won, but after the race, the judges checked the video again. They found out that the first-place runner had stepped on the line in another lane, which is against the rules. Because of this, the first-place runner was also disqualified.

In the end, the second-place runner was given the win. The event was full of excitement and drama, and it reminded everyone that in sports, following the rules is just as important as speed.

Student Quotes

Student blog piece by Isabella (Year 10) and Xuanhao (Year 12)

“Sports Day at Abbey College Cambridge is honestly one of my favourite days of the year. I’m not usually that into sports, but something about the atmosphere makes it impossible not to get involved.”

“What I enjoyed most was the team spirit. Everyone was shouting, clapping and cheering for their house, even if they weren’t competing. It felt like we were all connected, not just stuck in our usual friend groups. My house was really supportive, and even when someone lost, we’d still celebrate their effort.”

“The highlight for me was the guessing objects game. I didn’t expect to enjoy it, but it ended up being hilarious and intense at the same time. We solved two puzzles but I honestly didn’t care – I was just glad to be part of it.”

Do we even need sport?

Student blog piece by Binura (Year 12)

Sports are more than just games – they’re a big part of a healthy and balanced life. As a student, I’ve seen how playing sports helps me stay active, focused and less stressed. It’s a great break from screens and studies, and it keeps both the body and mind strong.

Being part of a team also teaches important skills like teamwork, discipline and communication. Even solo sports help build confidence and self-control. In short, sports make everyday life better – and a lot more fun.
