Year 12 Art Students Exhibit Work in Regional Student Showcase

We are delighted to announce that seven of our talented Year 12 A Level Art students have had their work selected for inclusion in a regional student art exhibition, on display at the Michaelhouse Café in Cambridge.

The exhibition brings together a vibrant collection of Lower Sixth artwork from across the region, celebrating a diverse and imaginative range of 2D outcomes. The selected works span disciplines such as printmaking, painting and drawing, and reflect the creativity and individuality of each young artist involved.

This special opportunity was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the four Cambridge art societies, who worked together to organise the exhibition and provide students with a platform to share their work with the wider public.

We are especially proud to share that the judges commended the presentation of our students’ work and praised their creativity. This recognition is a wonderful affirmation of their talent and the effort they put into their pieces.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work, imagination and professionalism. Their inclusion in this exhibition is a testament to the high standard of work being produced in our Art Department.

This painting is inspired by food illustrations, exploring dynamic uses of ink and watercolour. It developed from my photographs of still-life fruits, capturing their energy through bold and fluid techniques.” – Dongjin, Year 12

This image was created from an observation of a shell, using unidirectional lighting to emphasise the dominance of shadows and highlights. The lighting technique accentuates the form and texture of the shell, creating a striking contrast.” – Darikha, Year 12

I painted this piece from a still life of fruits after studying illustrator Natasha Clutterbuck, who uses fruits and vegetables as her inspiration. My goal was to create a bright and vibrant portrayal of the passion fruit, capturing its lively and unique essence.” – Pak Wing, Year 12

I painted this mountainous image inspired by the polygonal work of artist Torben Giehler, with the idea that music is a landscape of sounds. Combining this concept with the polygon effect, I incorporated a music sheet from a ‘classical book of music’, creating a stained-glass-like effect where you can almost see the music through the paint, much like hearing organ music in a church while peering through stained glass.” – Zhongsui, Year 12

I created this image after studying how artists use contour lines to shape landscapes and affect the perception of depth. Inspired by images of the Canadian Rockies and the Alps, I drew this imaginary landscape, exploring how contour lines can also create rich textural effects.” – Aylin, Year 12

I created this acrylic painting after studying how graphic designers use colour and line to simplify complex images into vibrant, striking works. By using reclaimed cardboard as my surface, I aimed to symbolise the landscape we damage through waste, reflecting both the beauty and the consequences of our environmental impact.” – Binura, Year 12

Celebrating Success at the ISA Animation Awards

We are delighted to announce that our talented students from Abbey College Cambridge have received prestigious recognition in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Animation Awards! The animation entries are now published on the ISA website.

In the Key Stage 3–4 category, students Zhirui (Year 10) and Xuanyi (Year 11) were awarded Highly Commended for their charming stop-motion animation “Hey Carrot!” This creative piece tells the delightful story of a group of animals chasing an elusive carrot. As the carrot continually evades them, the animals learn to work together in a fun and engaging narrative that captured the judges’ attention. Click here to view.

In the Key Stage 5 category, Lu (Year 12) won First Place with her imaginative animation titled “Homework.” This inspiring film captures students rebelling against the monotony of homework by transforming their assignments into paper aeroplanes and racing them—a clever metaphor that resonated strongly with the judges from the company ‘One Day Film School’. Click here to view.

We are also thrilled to announce that Thune (Year 12) and Yu Thinzar (Year 12) were awarded Highly Commended in the Key Stage 5 category for their enchanting animation depicting the journey of a feather. The film beautifully illustrates a feather falling from a bird, travelling across the seas, and eventually reuniting with the bird on a distant beach, a touching and poetic visual narrative. These outstanding animations were created during enrichment sessions as part of the Animation Club, led by Teacher Su Conroy and supported by Aiden Stephens.

Congratulations to all of our animation students for their creativity, dedication, and well-deserved success!
