The Importance of Wellbeing at Abbey College Cambridge

10th October 25

Dr Ellen Hesse, Principal,  talks about the importance of wellbeing and the holistic approach that is centre to the ethos here at Abbey College Cambridge.

Wellbeing plays a vital role in our lives, and in recent years, people have become increasingly aware of the need to strike the right balance between work, study, home commitments, and mental health. At Abbey College Cambridge, the key word we emphasise when supporting our young people and staff is BALANCE. True balance means getting the different aspects of our daily lives right, and having a wide range of strategies available to address challenges that may negatively affect our wellbeing.
We encourage everyone to consider wellbeing in a holistic way, recognising the importance of emotional, physical, technological, academic, future, and global health—all of which need equal attention.

Emotional Health
Positive, supportive, and caring relationships are essential to our wellbeing. A strong support network of friends, family, and colleagues can protect us against isolation and loneliness. To strengthen emotional health, it is helpful to devote time to hobbies, join clubs, and participate in group activities that build a sense of belonging.
Parents also play a crucial role in helping their children navigate the complexities of relationships. Taking time to listen, offering guidance, and encouraging open conversations about friendships can make a lasting difference. In addition, self-awareness and an understanding of our own emotions enable us to respond to stress, anxiety, or sadness early, using strategies we have learned and practised.

Physical Health
It is easy to skip exercise in our busy lives, but regular physical activity is essential for both body and mind. Whether through walking, running, or team sports, movement builds resilience, confidence, and energy.
At Abbey College Cambridge, we support physical health in several ways. Alongside a variety of sports clubs, the whole school uses MiMove to record exercise, which not only contributes to House points but also fosters a sense of community and shared purpose. The Run, Girl, Run! initiative was also created to encourage some of our less sporty girls to embrace physical activity in a fun and supportive way.

Technological Health
Technology brings opportunities, but excessive screen time, social media use, and gaming can negatively impact mental health. Finding balance is crucial. Setting personal limits on screen time and prioritising face-to-face interactions, exercise, and offline hobbies helps us maintain perspective and wellbeing.
Parents, too, play a vital role by setting clear house rules, being aware of school initiatives around online safety, and ensuring that technology acts as a tool for learning and connection rather than a source of stress.

Academic & Future Health
Children and young people spend much of their time at school, and their sense of progress and achievement is closely tied to their wellbeing. Effective study habits not only reduce anxiety but also help students feel more in control.
At Abbey College Cambridge, we run a six-week study skills programme at the start of each academic year to equip students with strategies for independent learning beyond the classroom. Strong foundations in skills such as resilience, perseverance, communication, and problem-solving also prepare students for the uncertainties of the future. Helping them feel confident, capable, and well-prepared ensures they can step into adulthood with greater self-assurance.

Global Health
Finally, we must not overlook the impact of global issues on wellbeing. Young people today are deeply aware of challenges such as political conflict, environmental change, and global inequality. These issues can feel overwhelming and contribute to anxiety.
At Abbey College Cambridge, we provide forums for discussion and encourage active engagement in charities and initiatives. This approach helps students feel empowered to make a difference rather than helpless in the face of global challenges.

Wellbeing is like a jigsaw puzzle—every piece matters. From emotional and physical health to how we use technology, study, prepare for the future, and engage with the wider world, each element contributes to the bigger picture. By working to keep these pieces in balance, we can create healthier, happier, and more resilient lives
