Introducing Young Explorers

13th October 25

Abbey College Cambridge has recently unveiled Young Explorers, a Saturday morning programme designed to ingratiate the younger pupils in the wonders of nature and the rich history in and around beautiful Cambridgeshire.  This programme supports the school’s holistic approach to wellbeing and inspires students to engage with the outdoors and nature and benefit from the advantages this offers mentally, emotionally and physically.  The mornings will also allow the students to develop key social skills and become more environmentally aware. The programme was developed by Will Taylor, Head of Transition and Housemaster.

Inaugural visits have included a trip to Cambridge’s Dragon Boat Festival, where students had the chance to learn about UK traditions, soak up the fresh air, and recharge their energy for the week ahead, and another enjoying punting on the River Cam, cruising past the famous colleges, bridges and gardens.

Future Saturday morning visits include a trip to Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, as one of Europe’s most important wetlands, attending a celebration of all things ‘apple, with a visit to Apple Day at Burwash Manor, and learning whilst ‘snapping’ at The Cambridge Photography Show.

Abbey College Cambridge Principal Dr Elena Hesse commented: “At the college, we are extremely lucky to have within easy reach so much environmental and historical interest, not to mention the incredible community spirit.

“Introducing our weekly programme allows us to make the most of the environment, history and wonderful events to expand young minds. We see these activities as a vital part of life here. While our students work hard in class, it’s equally important to have opportunities to relax, refresh, and build a healthy mind – ready to absorb new knowledge, learn new skills and develop their confidence.

“Moreover, to strengthen emotional health, it is helpful to devote time to hobbies, join clubs, and participate in group activities particularly those that include a connection to nature and the environment we live in, build a sense of belonging for us, as part of our overall wellbeing.

“Wellbeing plays a vital role in our lives, and in recent years, people have become increasingly aware of the need to strike the right balance between work, study, home commitments, and mental health. At Abbey College Cambridge, the key word we emphasise when supporting our young people and staff is BALANCE. True balance means getting the different aspects of our daily lives right, and having a wide range of strategies available to address challenges that may negatively affect our wellbeing.”
