Noche de Los Muertos – A Spectacular Celebration of Music!

1st December 25

Abbey College Cambridge came alive with rhythm and colour during our recent Noche de los Muertos Music Concert, an event that brought together students, staff, and even local parents for an unforgettable evening of performance and celebration. The concert theme, “Day of the Dead”, was chosen to reflect the many festivals of remembrance and commemoration that take place around the world at this time of year.

From Scott Joplin’s ragtime classics to Teresa Teng’s timeless melodies, and even a nod to Oasis, the programme showcased an extraordinary range of musical styles. Performances included vibrant pieces from our Ukulele Club, soulful duets, and powerful ensemble numbers by the Stage Performance Club and School Band, culminating in a lively set from the Staff Band. Highlights included “La Bohème”, “Burn from Hamilton”, and crowd favourites like “Don’t Look Back in Anger” and “Lovely Day”.

Ed Davison (Teacher of English & EAP), one of the event organisers, reflected:

Our concerts are a really unique and extraordinary part of life here at the college: a chance to celebrate as a community with staff, students and parents, and an opportunity for students’ talents and skills to be recognised by the wider school. Our student leadership team took an active role in promoting the event, and offered a face-painting service during the performance to raise funds for the school yearbook they are publishing this year.

What made this concert even more special was the strong connection to our enrichment programme. Many of the performers were active members of enrichment clubs such as Ukulele Club, Stage Performance Club, and School Band, demonstrating how these weekly activities nurture creativity and confidence beyond the classroom. Our Student Leadership Team also played an active role in promoting the event and offered a face-painting service during the performance to raise funds for the upcoming school yearbook project. The initiative was hugely popular, adding a festive touch to the night and helping support a meaningful student-led cause.

With fantastic attendance and an atmosphere of creativity and camaraderie, the concert was a resounding success. A huge thank you to all our performers, organisers, and everyone who joined us to make this celebration so special!
