Residential Trip to the Yorkshire Dales

31st May 23

On 9th – 12th May, Year 10 and Pre Sessional students participated in a residential trip to Ingleborough Hall in the Yorkshire Dales, where they undertook a number of outdoor pursuits and team building activities.

The students were divided into four groups,  each with a member of staff from Abbey College and an instructor from Ingleborough Hall.

Students took part in caving, gorge scrambling, tree climbing, orienteering, problem solving activities within the grounds, archery and “ Nightline” where they had to wear blindfolds and follow a rope trail through the trees.

The activities were designed to encourage the students to work together as a team and also to push them out of their comfort zone to build confidence and resilience. The activities also helped the students build on their communication and English skills.

See some of the students’ feedback below:

“On the top of a mountain, breathing fresh oxygen, you feel like you’ve won a huge competition.”

“Being claustrophobic in that dark little space in the cave, you think” If I can do this, then life won’t feel as hard anymore.”

“The most enjoyable activity was caving because I had never tried it before this trip, so it was a really unforgettable experience.”

“Going caving was fun, but at the same time it was the hardest thing I’ve done in my life. If you ask me if I would do it again, of course I would.”

“I tried my hardest and eventually got to the top of the gorge. The view was stunning and I felt proud of overcoming my fear.”

Here is a short film of the visit.
