Year 10s Adventure in the Lake District

21st May 26

Abbey College Cambridge’s Year 10 and Pre-sessional students recently took part in an unforgettable residential trip to Windermere in the Lake District National Park, combining outdoor adventure with teamwork, personal growth, and language development.

Set against the breath-taking backdrop of England’s largest natural lake, students stayed in Windermere’s idyllic countryside setting, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. With exclusive use of the site, the group benefited from a safe and supportive environment that encouraged collaboration, independence, and resilience. Read on to find out what the students got up to!

A Week of Adventure and Growth

In partnership with Carnegie Great Outdoors (Leeds Beckett University), students participated in a diverse range of outdoor activities led by highly experienced instructors. These included:

  • Rock climbing and abseiling
  • Canoeing and kayaking
  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Gorge scrambling
  • Mountain adventure challenges

Working in small groups, students not only developed practical outdoor skills but also strengthened essential qualities such as teamwork, leadership and perseverance.

Stepping Outside Comfort Zones

The trip provided many opportunities for students to overcome personal challenges. For Juwon, climbing proved to be a defining experience:

“The most challenging was the climbing, where I had to overcome my fear of height. It was when I went kayaking that I had the most fun – rowing the boat and staying on the water.”

Others found that unexpected moments became the most memorable. Mani reflected:

“My favourite moment was rock climbing as it was very enjoyable and I was very good at it. Something that didn’t go to plan was when five of us tried to fit on one kayak – we ended up sinking it and barely made it anywhere! I would definitely recommend this trip because it was very fun and we got to do lots of new things.”

Building Friendships Through Teamwork

The residential experience also played a key role in strengthening friendships and communication skills. David highlighted how teamwork was at the heart of the experience:

“Canoeing was the most fun because we practised teamwork as a group… although it was challenging when our teammate kept falling in! It helped build my confidence and leadership skills, and I strengthened my friendships. This trip was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had at Abbey College.”

Similarly, Anthony emphasised the balance of challenge and enjoyment:

“My favourite moment was canoeing – we beat the girls’ team every time! Gorge scrambling was tough, especially squeezing through tight spaces, but I overcame it. Even when things didn’t go to plan, like sinking the kayak, it was still really funny and memorable.”

Beyond the Classroom

More than just an adventurous escape, the Windermere residential is a core part of the Abbey College experience. It offers students the chance to:

  • Build confidence in unfamiliar environments
  • Develop resilience and problem-solving skills
  • Improve communication and teamwork
  • Strengthen friendships beyond the classroom

Evenings were spent reflecting on the day’s activities, taking part in team challenges, and enjoying a visit to Windermere village, fostering a strong sense of community among students.

A Lasting Impact

The residential trip continues to be a highlight of the academic year, offering a unique blend of education and adventure that cannot be replicated in the classroom. As Juwon noted:

“I would recommend this trip to current Year 9 students because it helps strengthen friendships.”

With lasting memories, stronger bonds, and new skills gained, the 2026 Windermere residential once again proved to be an invaluable experience for Abbey College students.
