Abbey Cambridge joins BSA Boarding Orchard

14th September 23

Abbey College Cambridge are proud to have joined the Boarding School Association’s (BSA) Boarding Orchard and be part of what is hoped to be the largest orchard by distance in the UK.  The College Community planted a Cherry Tree in the courtyard at Homerton Gardens on Wednesday, 13th September.

Principal, Dr Ellen Hesse was joined by David Walker, Director of the BSA, Tim Haynes, Chairman Designate of Abbey DLD Colleges Ltd, the College Senior Leadership Team and the Student Leadership Team for the tree planting ceremony.  All the students in the Student Leadership Team made wishes for the entire boarding community in the UK and around the world.

The wishes included:

“I wish for boarders to make the most of the wonderful experience of boarding and to become a much better person.”

“Enjoy boarding as much as you can and get involved I all the various activities and remember there is always someone to support you.”

“Settle well into the community and make the most of all the opportunities given”.

The Boarding Orchard was launched by the BSA in 2014. It aims to be the ‘largest’ orchard by geography in the world and encourages schools to involve their pupils in planting trees to support the environment. Since launch, schools across the UK – including Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – have joined the Boarding Orchard, and trees have also been planted at boarding schools in Switzerland, Russia and the USA. The initiative has also gained approval from HRH King Charles III.

Ellen Hesse commented “It’s a privilege to welcome David Walker, Director of BSA, here today for our tree planting ceremony and to become part of the global Boarding Orchard.  By planting this tree we show our commitment to supporting the environment and to work with the whole boarding community to promote sustainability to the next generation.  Boarding is such an important part of life here at Abbey Cambridge and we are delighted to be part of this boarding project.”
