Thorpe Park Visit

On Saturday 28th May our Abbey College Cambridge Harvey Road boarding students took a break from their studies to enjoy a day out at the popular Thorpe Park Amusement Park.
The trip, which was organised by our college pastoral team, proved popular with the students who woke up early on the Saturday morning and arrived at the park full of excitement, and perhaps a little trepidation upon seeing some of the larger rides at the park!
Once inside the park the students divided into small groups, each under that supervision of a member of college staff, and set off to explore the different themed lands, which include the UK’s fastest rollercoaster and tallest log flume ride amongst others.
Despite their initial apprehension, many students took up the challenge to ride some of the park’s more challenging rollercoasters. Students Mike and Peak, who were visiting a theme park for the first time, particularly enjoyed themselves, saying ‘We had many new experiences today, we tried some new rides like the tidal wave – we got soaked with water, luckily it was sunny so we dried quickly!’
For those not seeking quite as many thrills, the park also offered lots of games and more sedate rides. The students enjoyed competing with each other for prizes in many of the games on offer. Peter spoke of competing with his friends: ‘today I learned how to play mini basketball, it was quite difficult and I hope next time I can win many more prizes.’
Trips like this one are designed to offer our students a fun day out, and to build the family ethos amongst students and staff. They also represent and reinforce the strong community ethos held by all at the college. One of the trip leaders, Harvey Road House Parent Troy Hill, commented on the day.
‘The students were such a credit to us and we were really proud of how adventurous many of them were, despite saying they had never been on an adult theme park ride before. This wonderful trip took place all under the beam of the lovely British summer sun – the rain we had anticipated never came. It was a day that will live long in the memory for many of our students.’
