Chemists excel in the 2016 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge

7th July 16

Abbey College Cambridge Chemistry Challenge
Iris receives her ‘Chemistry Student of the Year’ award at our end of year assembly from Vice Principal Gavin Copland and Alexandra Whalley, Head of Natural Sciences.

Our Abbey College Cambridge Chemistry students are celebrating outstanding success in the 2016 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.

The challenge is set by the University of Cambridge and is aimed at Lower Sixth students who wish to take their Chemistry studies further. The 90 minute paper consists of two or three questions set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists.

Topping the honours list, Wang Yuxuan (Iris) received the highest award possible, the Roentgenium. Iris, who is also our Abbey College Cambridge ‘Chemistry Student of the Year’, placed in the top 0.76% of the 7,229 students who entered the competition.

She has now been invited to take part in a residential Chemistry summer camp based at St Catharine’s College and the University Chemical Laboratory. It provides her with a tremendous opportunity to meet other first-rate students and hone her Chemistry skills, whilst getting a taste of life at one of the world’s best universities.

Alongside Iris, 3 of our Chemists received gold awards, 4 received Silver awards and 3 received Copper awards. This is an amazing result given that nearly half of the students who participated in this year’s challenge received no award at all.

Gold Award winners

Nguyen Bao Chau, Nguyen Pham Minh Duy (Jason), Xie Junyu (Arthur)

Silver Award winners

Lee Minn Alessa, Song Jiaoyang (Ivy), Wang Pengzhou, Zhao Weiting

Copper Award winners

Oo Win Let (Audrey), Tanjittasuwan Tanapat (France), Tanjittasuwan Kantapat (Frong)

Alexandra Whalley, Head of our Department of Natural Sciences, was justifiably proud of all our student award winners:

“The results from the Chemistry Challenge this year are possibly the best we have had yet. To have them all receive awards from this notoriously difficult challenge is fantastic news. It also reflects the hard work undertaken by their teachers to nurture and prepare them throughout the year. Congratulations to you all!
