Chemists excel in the 2016 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge

Our Abbey College Cambridge Chemistry students are celebrating outstanding success in the 2016 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.
The challenge is set by the University of Cambridge and is aimed at Lower Sixth students who wish to take their Chemistry studies further. The 90 minute paper consists of two or three questions set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists.
Topping the honours list, Wang Yuxuan (Iris) received the highest award possible, the Roentgenium. Iris, who is also our Abbey College Cambridge ‘Chemistry Student of the Year’, placed in the top 0.76% of the 7,229 students who entered the competition.
She has now been invited to take part in a residential Chemistry summer camp based at St Catharine’s College and the University Chemical Laboratory. It provides her with a tremendous opportunity to meet other first-rate students and hone her Chemistry skills, whilst getting a taste of life at one of the world’s best universities.
Alongside Iris, 3 of our Chemists received gold awards, 4 received Silver awards and 3 received Copper awards. This is an amazing result given that nearly half of the students who participated in this year’s challenge received no award at all.
