Students and Staff Raise £4,000 for the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices

Students and staff of Abbey College Cambridge have been commended by the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) after raising £4,000 in the last academic year for the Cambridge based charity.
The £4,000 total was raised from a number of fundraising events held both in and outside of the college throughout the year. The funds were presented to EACH’s Karen Newton EACH by members of our student volunteering club and Head of GCSE Fiona McEwan-Cox.
Activities and events that contributed to the total included participating and fundraising at the annual Chariots of Fire Charity Race through Cambridge’s Colleges in September 2016.
In October students threw a Halloween party on campus, with proceeds from the spooky games and food stalls all going to EACH. In December students helped local business set up and collected funds at the Mill Road Winter Fair in Cambridge City Centre. They also held collections at the college’s Christmas Assembly and Ball.
In February the college held its annual cupid themed collection and in Easter collections were made at the college Easter Assembly.
In April the popular charity Fair, based on an ‘around the world’ theme raised significant funds through games and activities. Further collections were taken at the college’s May Ball for graduating students.
Ibtehal Albejw, one of the many Abbey students who helped with the fundraising activities spoke of her experiences over the year; ‘‘My desire to give back and my feeling of taking actions to change a life as well as making a difference drove me to volunteer for EACH. It was a great opportunity to make contact with people and support them, which brings me great satisfaction and comfort.’’
Head of GCSE Fiona McEwan-Cox, who helps co-ordinate college volunteering activities also added; ‘’Abbey Cambridge is full of energetic, altruistic students who are willing and able to help the school and the wider Cambridge community. It is an honour to work with them every week.’’
