Abbey College Cambridge Pre-Sessional and Year 10 Residential Trip to Letton Hall

Pre-Sessional and Year 10 Residential Trip

Our Pre-Sessional and year 10 students travelled to sunny (and warm) Norfolk for a week long residential course. Accommodation for the week was the stately home Letton Hall, and students formed teams to tackle a series of challenges that included planning and cooking meals for the whole group, short story writing, and an apprentice style business challenge. These activities were specially designed to develop their communication, leadership and team work abilities – all skills that will be vital for success in their future studies. There was also plenty of time for go-karting, archery, ultimate Frisbee, tree top trekking and Segway riding!

Abbey College Cambridge Abbey Inspires Alliance to Armada

Abbey Inspires, from ‘Alliance to Armada’

The highlight of this week’s ‘Abbey Inspires’ evening lecture programme was provided by our History tutors. Students took on the roles of opposing naval commanders to recreate the 1588 battle between the British Navy and Spanish Armada. Students learned about the events that led up to the battle, which will be covered in the A Level syllabus. Head of Humanities Dr David Shah was impressed by how much the students immersed themselves into the battle role-play, commenting ‘I certainly enjoyed the students getting into the roles of the historical characters (e.g. Chiara’s rebellious Francis Drake, Patrick’s ever-more nervous Medina-Sidonia and Kala’s scarily convincing Philip II!).’

Abbey College Cambridge Duke of Edinburgh Award Training Expedition

Students complete DofE training expedition

Over the weekend our Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award candidates completed their training expedition by camping, trekking and canoeing in the wild and windy Cambridgeshire countryside! This supervised expedition precedes their qualifying expeditions later in the year, where the students will journey across a wild, unfamiliar area for up to 4 days whilst working as a team to navigate, camp and cook for themselves (with mostly remote supervision by Abbey staff). The DofE is a globally recognised qualification that develops student’s skills and confidence and is highly valued by both universities and employers. Abbey College Cambridge is a DofE Directly Licensed Organisation, providing both silver and gold awards. Find out more by visiting the Duke of Edinburgh site here.
