Year 12 Student Earns International Recognition in John Locke Global Essay Prize

Abbey College Cambridge is delighted to congratulate Deniz, in Year 12, on receiving a Highly Commended award in the Science & Technology category of the prestigious John Locke Global Essay Prize.
The John Locke Global Essay Prize is one of the world’s most respected academic essay competitions for school-aged students, attracting tens of thousands of entries from across the globe. Essays are judged by a panel of leading academics from universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton and Stanford, with students challenged to demonstrate independent thinking, critical analysis and persuasive argumentation.
Deniz’s Highly Commended award places him among a select group of students recognised for the exceptional quality of their work in an intensely competitive international field. This year’s competition attracted more than 100,000 contestants from 191 nationalities, highlighting the significance of his achievement.
The Science & Technology category encourages students to engage with complex contemporary issues, requiring not only subject knowledge but also originality of thought and the ability to construct a clear and compelling argument. Deniz’s success reflects both his academic curiosity and his commitment to intellectual exploration beyond the classroom.
Commenting on the achievement, Ellen Hesse, Principal said: “What a tremendous success. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Deniz’s essay and I am not surprised at all that he was highly commended. The essay was well-researched and commanded a convincing argument all the way through. I am immensely proud!”
