Christmas Assemblies 2015

Our Abbey College Cambridge staff and students have been getting in the festive spirit and celebrating this year’s many successes at our Christmas Assemblies. Students were greeted at the assembly hall by elves, snowmen and even some of Santa’s reindeer. As students walked into the assembly they experienced a taste of Winter with snow, Christmas carols, a brass band, crackers and Father Christmas hats providing a welcome and warming burst of festive joy and cheer.
The theme of this year’s assemblies was ‘Heroes’, kicking off with students and staff sharing memories of the people who have inspired them. These ranged from sports stars and scientists through to parents and friends.
Live music and entertainment was provided by our staff and student bands, covering everything from traditional carols through to contemporary rock and pop songs, all performed with a festive flourish! Our student’s gave a recital of the 12 days of Christmas, and there was even a ‘snowman fancy dress’ contest, where they took great delight in dressing up their teachers in as ridiculous manner as possible!
One of the highlights of the assembly came from the ‘Best Christmas Jumper Competition’. Wearing a bright, themed jumper is a popular Christmas tradition in the UK. Some fantastically festive jumpers worn by staff and students were up for judgement this year. The eventual winners, judged by our audience ‘applause-o-meter’ were Rose and Graham from our college staff team, and students Kanan and Tamerlan.
We also received a surprise visit from Father Christmas himself, who took some time out of his busy schedule to drop in and present prizes to our students in recognition of excellent commitment to their studies and extra-curricular activities throughout the term.
The festivities were rounded of by college principal Dr Julian Davies, who got the crowd dancing with his rousing rendition of ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’, ably supported by the Abbey College Cambridge staff dancers.
As well as providing a great way to celebrate the end of term, and this special time of year, the assembly also provided a chance for our college community to show their generosity and support for our college charity; East Anglia’s Children’ Hospice (EACH). Through student and staff donations at the assemblies we were able to raise £215 for the charity, which provides care and support for life threatened children and their families in the Cambridge area. This combined with the elegant May Ball brings our fundraising total to almost £4,000.
