Outstanding performance from budding Chemists in UK Olympiad

On Friday 22nd January, 17 chemistry students from Abbey College Cambridge sat the UK Chemistry Olympiad. This competition is designed to challenge and inspire the top chemistry students aged 16 and over in UK sixth forms. This enriching experience is a unique opportunity for students to push themselves further and excel in the chemistry field.
Here at Abbey College Cambridge, we recognise the importance of students having the opportunities that Olympiads offer to develop and push their knowledge. Through participation, aspiring chemists have the opportunity to develop critical problem-solving skills, learn to think more creatively and get a chance to test their knowledge in new, real-world situations.
The results have now been announced and of the 17 Abbey College Cambridge students who sat the Olympiad, 15 received awards, which equates to 88% of our entrants, compared to the national school average of 65% . This is a very difficult exam and so any award is a real achievement.
A special congratulation goes to Peijia, Luling, Ziyu and Juan Francisco for achieving gold awards. This shows the amazing talents of our students, as the school average for Gold awards is 9% and we achieved a fantastic 24%.
5 students received silver awards (Joecelyn, Napatsorn, Lance, Ian and Quang Minh) and 6 bronze (Yaqi, Banga, Victoria, Jessica, Phattharasai and Victoria).
Allan Smith, Chemistry Teacher at Abbey College Cambridge commented, “Well done to everyone who took part. This Olympiad is really difficult and great opportunity for students to develop and apply their knowledge in different ways. It really enhances a love for the subject and helps those students who are looking to take their Chemistry studies further than A Level.”
