Abbey College Cambridge students and staff have been commended by the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) after raising £10,000 in the last year for the charity which has a hospice in Milton, Cambridge and HRH The Duchess of Cambridge as their Royal Patron.

The £10,000 total was raised from a number of fundraising events held both in and outside the college throughout the year. The funds were presented to Karen Newton, EACH Fundraiser by the Head of the Student Council Dmitry Shmelev and Kapampa Mwape.

Activities and events that contributed to the total included organising a themed Charity Fair, Halloween party, a Christmas Ball and a fundraising May Ball. Students also sold Valentine’s Day cards as well as fundraising at local supermarkets and the Mill Road Winter Fair.

Kapampa Mwape, one of our student fundraising volunteers was enthused by the amount raised for charity: ‘It’s been an experience like no other; right from the beginning we’ve been active in our immediate community and raised a lot of money for EACH’.

Speaking of our student’s efforts College Principal Dr Julian Davies said: ‘Over the past three years we have worked hard as a school to give something back to the Cambridge community and have raised around £20,000 in total for the children and families who benefit from the outstanding care of the hospice in Milton. EACH is a charity that genuinely helps the lives of families in Cambridge in need of our support. Abbey Cambridge is an international school made up of students from around the world, and what unites us is compassion for others who need our help.’

EACH care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions and support their families across Cambridgeshire. Karen Newton, EACH Cambridgeshire Fundraiser, said: “I would like to thank everyone at Abbey College for their hard work and determination in raising this tremendous amount of money. At EACH we rely heavily on voluntary donations to continue to run our vital services caring for families at a time when they need it most. All the money Abbey College has so generously raised will go towards these local services.”
