Generous Abbey College Cambridge students have  donated 180 bags of clothing and personal items to our college charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

The final haul of donations, weighed in at an astonishing 892kgs, as heavy as a Volkswagen Beetle car, and filled two large EACH collection vans to the brim.

Donations were co-ordinated by the college’s GSCE students and members of the volunteering club, working together with staff from the college boarding, pastoral and reception teams. They asked departing students, many of whom will return back to their home countries over the summer, to donate any excess and unwanted personal items that they did not need to take with them.

The collection which includes shirts, t-shirts, jeans, shoes, bags, dresses, and one ironing board, will now be distributed to EACH shops across East Anglia where funds raised from their sale will help support the charity’s work in caring and supporting for seriously ill children and their families across the region.

College Office manager Valerie Whyborn, who helped co-ordinate the effort commented;

“I had no idea how successful this would be, the response from the students was overwhelming! I’m quite glad that I am not the one having to sort out the bags for selling and recycling, as nothing will be wasted.”

Harriet McBride, EACH Retail Distribution Centre Manager, said:

“What a fantastic amount of donations! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed. We rely on the generosity of supporters to keep our 24 shops across the region fully stocked, so these items are very welcome.”

At the time of writing it is believed that the ironing board is still available for purchase…
