Volunteering Club visit East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices

15th March 18

Abbey Cambridge Volunteer at East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices

On Tuesday 6th March Abbey College Cambridge students from our Volunteering Club paid a visit to volunteer at our College charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). From its base just North of Cambridge the hospice supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions.

We were welcomed by Polly West, EACH Community Fundraiser for Cambridgeshire, who explained the role of the hospice and how they support not only the children but their families too. As there were no children on site we were fortunate enough to get a tour of their wonderful facilities, including the music room, the crafts room and the sensory room. There is also a very peaceful area for reflection and prayer called “The Haven” which has an instant calming effect on those entering. The hospice has its own swimming pool and lovely gardens.

Our volunteer students were extremely interested and quite amazed by the extent of the work carried out by the hospice and their staff, also learning that it costs in the region of £5,000 a day to run the hospice. As our college charity, we have helped to contribute over £30,000 to EACH over the last 4 years through the fundraising efforts of our staff and students. EACH is extremely grateful to the college for our continued support, and we are sure that the visit has encouraged the volunteers to organise even more events in the future.
